Pakistani actor Fawad Khan has been getting several compliments for his looks and acting skills from his Indian fans but the best, he says, is when people compliment him, saying they have started watching TV again because of him.
“People often tell me that they had stopped watching TV and considered it an idiot box, until they watched my show Zindagi Gulzar Hai and other Pakistani shows. People say, ‘We never used to watch TV and now we sit down together and watch your shows’; that’s flattering. It’s a big compliment and I am truly honoured,” says Fawad, who made his Bollywood debut recently, alongside actor Sonam Kapoor.
Then there are those who go beyond compliments and hail him as a cultural ambassador. “Yes, people do expect me to be a cultural ambassador of sorts and it’s an immense responsibility,” says Fawad, adding, “People on both the sides are not able to see the culture or life on the other side. So, when actors or artistes participate in each other’s countries, we can help this gap heal. It’s through each other’s music, television, and other media that we educate each other. It’s a step forward.”
There are also those who say their image of Pakistan changed after watching Pakistani shows. “Yes, people have told me that too. And It’s a great thing and I think it’s both ways, actually,” says the 33-year-old.

So, were any of his prejudices broken when he came down to India? “Well, I am a man of few opinions and prejudices. It feels great that I have been received so well. I guess I am really lucky,” says Fawad.
