Actress Scarlett Johansson is set to play female lead in a TV show, an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel “The Custom Of The Country”.

According to a report in Deadline, Johansson will also be the executive producer of the eight-episode period story based on the 1913 novel. Sony Pictures TV will showcase the series. The drama is taken from the series of work done by the American novelist, the Pulitzer Prize winner Edith Wharton (The Age Of Innocence). The 29-year-old star will be seen as a mid-western girl, Undine Spragg, looking to rise in the New York high society ranks in the early part of the 20th century in the series.

Besides Johansson, there is another big name attached to the project as Oscar-winning British playwright-screenwriter Christopher Hampton is on board to write the screenplay of the limited series. Hampton originally wrote a feature script adaptation of Custom Of The Country about two decades ago for Michelle Pfeiffer who had starred in the 1993 feature Age Of Innocence, based on Wharton’s book. It was published in 2002 as part of a collection of Hampton screenplays.
